The definition that is easiest to understand is simply revenue less expenses. Merriam-Webster's first definition is "a valuable return."
This definition does not mean your business will naturally earn a profit, maximize its profit or earn a valuable return.
I encourage you to first address cash profits and then total profit. There is a difference.
